| Oxfam was founded in Oxford in 1942 to help people who were starving in occupied Greece during World War Two. It has grown to become a worldwide movement of people working towards a world without poverty and suffering.
We need your help to shareOxfam's story here in Oxfordshire, where Oxfam belongs: to 'bring Oxfam home' and to raise vital funds to help people escape poverty once and for all.

So here's the B4 Oxfam challenge for 2012:
- to reach 50,000 Oxfordshire people with Oxfam's story, and
- to raise £100,000 for Oxfam's work around the world.
| Here are some examples of the good the money you raise could do: |
£14,250 could help to construct a new borehole in South Sudan
"Before Oxfam drilled the borehole we collected water from shallow wells. During the dry season, we had to go very far. It could take anything from one to three hours, and you'd have to go three times a day to have enough water for cooking, bathing the children and drinking." Alice Keji, water caretaker, Upper Nile, South Sudan. |
£9,600 could help to end violence against women by taking to the airwaves. For one year, these monthly radio programmes will go out in seven languages across 200 districts of India. |
£6,300 could help the lives of youth groups in some of Kenya’s most troubled areas by buying machinery for a recycling plant in the Nairobi slums.
"We want to see all these dirty bits of plastic turned into fence posts and bowls and sandals. Plastic recycling is win-win. We get paid and we keep the place clean. Younger kids here see us as role models. We can save lives. Fewer will turn to crime than in our generation." Kalvin Otieno, a member of 'One Love' youth group in Nairobi which collects and sorts rubbish. |
£27 give a teacher in Vietnam a days’ training in better teaching methods to cut drop-out rates and boost learning levels.
"After I applied the new teaching methods I learned, I discovered that my pupils were learning for themselves and having discussions. The relationship between me and my pupils is much better so they feel more confident to ask questions." Mr. Lam Uy Vu, a teacher at Hieu Trung B primary school in Tra Vinh province, Vietnam. |

Oxfam just came third in The Global Journal's rankings of the top 100 NGOs (number one was Wikimendia and number two Partners for Health a small charity that works just in Haiti).
“In many ways, Oxfam encapsulates in one organization the various functions of a modern NGO. It engages in humanitarian work, assisting those immediately affected by conflict and natural disasters. It implements development programs, seeking to lift communities out of poverty with long-term, sustainable solutions. It lobbies and advocates, in a bid to affect policy decisions on the causes of conflict at local, national, and international levels. It undertakes in-depth and rigorous research into best practices and structural challenges. And it does all of these things effectively and to the highest standards.” |
